Echinocactus grusonii
The Golden Barrel Cactus is a well known cactus and is easily spotted in the lanscape. It is native to central Mexico and despite being highly cultivated, it is endangered in the wild. In warm climates it is easy to cultivate.
Classification: Perennial Height: 2-3 feet Sow: Fall Light: Full sun Bloom: Yellow blooms in mid-summer. Hardy in Zones 9 through 11. Will not tolerate long period of cold temperatures and moist soil as it is susceptible to rot. Prefers alkaline, unimproved desert soil. Direct sow or grow in containers. Considered drought tolerant.
