Wednesday, 01 April 2009

April in the greenhouse is a flurry of activity.  There are seedlings abound and the melon vines are covered in blossoms.  The oldest mesquite tree is now taller than me!

Honeydew and Mesquite Print E-mail
Monday, 23 March 2009

With spring in full swing, growth on the mesquite trees has really taken off!  Hopefully they will be ready to move outside by the fall.

The very first melon was harvested from the greenhouse this morning.  Although it was a tad overripe, it was probably the tastiest honeydew I have ever eaten!

March Greenhouse Update Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 March 2009

Somehow I got starting posting monthly updates.  I think it began as a way to remind myself to take "the whole picture" since I found myself taking close-up photos of the plants.

Here on the first day of March, the outside temperature was 74 degrees with a low of 41 degrees.  Inside the greenhouse (with the ventilation fan running), the high is around 90 degrees and the low in the mid-fifties.

I can definitely tell spring is right around the corner.  The lizards are coming out and the weeds are coming up.  Even my test plot right outside the greenhouse is showing signs of life!

Today I rearrange some of the plants because the asparagus was unhappy on the west side and the tomatoes unhappy on the east side.  So I switched them and moved some of the pots around to make room on the benches for the new seedlings that will surely be around the corner from yesterday's project.

I lifted a few of the bulbs that just weren't cutting it and set them to dry for storage.  Some of the mesquite trees got potted up and the yellow pear tomatoes(not visible) got larger pots, too.

Also, one of the strawberries is beginning to ripen.  Is it done yet?

Adventures in Seed Starting Print E-mail
Saturday, 28 February 2009

Today was a busy seed sowing day.  I pulled out a seventy-two cell flat, a few extra small pots and some plant markers and went to town!

Among the seeds sowed were my fruit and vegetable seeds.  Four different types of tomatoes, four kinds of melons, beans, cucumber, zucchini, sweet and hot peppers and pepinos.  Herbs were also sowed today, including marjoram, sage, tarragon and Dark Opal basil.  Then there were a few for the kitties as well, catnip and cat grass to be exact.

I also sowed my tester seeds for the landscape seeds I got from Plants of the Southwest.  If the testers go well, then a full onslaught of seed sowing madness will ensue in the greenhouse to get those plants started.

All I can say is that if everything gets going, it will be a jungle in the greenhouse.  Not that it's a bad thing...

Greenhouse Potting Bench Print E-mail
Sunday, 22 February 2009

My father-in-law surprised me today with a brand new potting bench that he built for me.  I absolutely love it!  It is super sturdy and gorgeous to boot.

I defintely see many years of plants getting new homes on this baby!
