Are they strawberries yet? Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 January 2009

I am so excited about my strawberry plants.

I love strawberries.  Not the little wild or alpine strawberries that fool my tastebuds by being sour.  I love the sweet, juicy strawberries that these promise to be!

This is about 18 days worth of growth on the plants.  They seem to love the greenhouse!  Which is good, because I plan to nuture them to a plethora of strawberries to eat!

The Greenhouse Workout Print E-mail
Monday, 19 January 2009

Just the other day, I was wondering to myself, "Where did these biceps come from?"

Growing up, I never had muscular arms.  With my newly discovered biceps, it occured to me that all the digging, lifting and carrying I do on a daily basis in the greenhouse was the culprit!

Turns out that I'm not the only one participating in The Greenhouse Workout.

A recent study from Kansas State University offers positive health benefits and gardening provides a moderate workout.

Greenhouse Ventilation Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 January 2009

The greenhouse ventilation is back in business.  The plastic vent shutter snapped into pieces during a windstorm.

Now it is replaced with a tighter fitting aluminum one.

Looking back at it, I should have never put plastic shutters in, especially with the track record of my greenhouse in the wind.

You live.  You learn.

Mesquite Trees Print E-mail
Saturday, 17 January 2009

My little babies are growing up!  The largest of the bunch of mesquite trees are about three feet tall and are now starting to get their bark.  My next project will be to pot them up to five gallon pots.

I get my pots from a local nursery that recycles used black plastic pots.  People bring them back and I buy them for a few cents per pot.  After cleaning them up, they are good as new!

Honeydew Teaser Print E-mail
Friday, 16 January 2009

This honeydew is absolutely teasing me!  The melon is now larger than a golf ball.  I know it still has a way to go, but it is a reminder everyday in the greenhouse that I can hardly wait to harvest it.

The plant itself is quite healthy, but has not set any more blossoms as I suspect the temperatures fluctuate a little too much right now.  I am sure that in a few more weeks, the vines will have more flowers.
