Joining in on the tradition started by May Dreams Gardens Blog, the 15th of every month is Bloom Day. There are not any blooms right now in the greenhouse except for this tiny little blossom on the upside Jelly Bean grape tomato plant. There is bud on the Amaryllis and fruit on the tomato and honeydew plants, but that's about it for now! | Tomato Blossom |
It's crazy to think that here in the desert southwest, winter is pretty uneventful. A little rain occasionally and a few wind storms. But last month on December 17th, we had a huge snow storm that brought Las Vegas to a stand still. It snowed heavily all day long and with no snow removal equipment, we just hung out and enjoyed the weather. (The photo is of my in-laws' backyard early in the day.) The last time Las Vegas had a snow storm like this was back in 1979! The reason I share this on Bloom Day is that the high temperature today was almost seventy degrees! (Which is warmer than usual.) It was also this storm that brought a series of cloudy days, so the termpature dipped in the greenhouse causing a bit of plant damage and the loss of a few of them. | Snow in Las Vegas

The first sign of an asparagus spear peaked through the dirt today. This being the first season I have ever used bareroots, I am quite happy with the results! Just make sure your roots look healthy before you buy them. Heathly roots have a white-ish hue to them while dead roots look, well, dead. If you choose to grow asparagus in your garden or greenhouse, make sure to give them plenty of room. They have large root structures. Also, make sure that when you do harvest to leave some shoots behind so it can continue to be a healthy, productive plant. | Young Asparagus Spear

Are you longing for summer yet? The jury is still out here and in Southern Nevada, the ground is not covered in snow and the greenhouse stays warm, but not quite warm enough for warm season vegetables and not cool enough for cool season vegetables. Yet these little grape tomatoes keep hanging on and growing. The growth is slow, but it is still there and every day these little tomatoes get a bit riper. | Grape Tomatoes

Today's greenhouse project was to pot the plant purchases from last night. I got Peruvian Daffodil bulbs, Lucifer Cannas and Asparagus roots. I did not take a picture of them in their pots since all it looks like is a pot of dirt, but I will be sure to post photos once they grow. I will be neat to see Peruvian Daffodils, the flower petals look quite interesting! | Plant Purchases

| We got the idea for this project from The Cheap Vegetable Gardener blog. It was definitely a cheap project, the strand of LED Christmas lights were on clearance for $1.75 and the box was $4. I sowed Mexican Bird of Paradise and Penstemon. I am excited to see the results with the grow box. | LED Grow Box Project | |
