Oregano

Origanum vulgare

Oregano is probably best known for its use in Italian dishes, pizza and tomato sauces.  It is noted for its hot, pepper-like flavor.

Classification: Perennial
Height: 18-30 inches
Sow: Late Winter or Early Spring after danger of frost, surface sow.  Seeds require light to germinate.
Germination Time: 7 to 14 days

Prefers full light.

Oregano readily self-seeds.  Cutting back old growth in the late winter will cause fast, new growth in the spring.

Flowers: Purple, although some varieties do not flower.

Thrives in well-drained, sandy soil.

Hardy in Zones 5 to 9.
