I love to plant things that produce something that I can enjoy later on but in a desert climate it's sometimes very difficult. Since I've spent a relatively small amount of time in the desert I've payed attention to my neighbors and the noted the more successful plants that will grow in the area. One plant I've had extremely good luck with is the pomegranate. This bush/tree is very hardy and can go without water for extended periods of time without causing a lot of damage to the plant. I have two of them and one of the bushes will produce me 3 pomegranates this year. It's a small harvest but the plant requires such little care and attention that I think it's worth it for anybody who lives in a hot climate to try it. It also blooms for quite a long period of time during the year. the pomegranate has bright red flowers that start off as round red buds that hang around for a long time. I've also purchased an olive tree to see how that fairs in this climate and have my sights set on a pistachio tree too.
